** S. 649: „It is often assumed by writers dealing with the history of Catholic public worship, that the influence of Ignatius Loyola was so completely on the side of private prayer, vocal or mental, as to be singularly detrimental to the communal side of Catholic worship. Writers as careful as Romano Guardini assert that liturgy has no place in the Spiritual Exercises, and that public worship is therefore ruled out of the Ignatian way; brilliant minds (let Bremond's be a sample) find Ignatian prayer destructive of social-minded Christianity; scholars even as informed as Anthony Baumstark hold Ignatius to be the last and the greatest of the "Iberian Cave Men," a a solitary whose mantle would weigh very heavy on Catholic public worship just when that most needed reform and support.“ | ** S. 649: „It is often assumed by writers dealing with the history of Catholic public worship, that the influence of Ignatius Loyola was so completely on the side of private prayer, vocal or mental, as to be singularly detrimental to the communal side of Catholic worship. ** S. 90: „But here, with Liturgy and Personality, it is difficult not to think of another, a classic, and until now incomparable study – Romano Guardini´s The Spirit of the Liturgy. The two differ, not so much in substance as in form. The latter is shorter by a great deal, is on the whole more engagingly and simply written, is less obviously structural and systematic, and thus perhaps more agreeably read and easily understood by the lay student. Yet the two are similar in that they do for the study of liturgical science what few authors have done or seem capable of doing - they lay hold of the spirit of the Liturgy and present it in convincing and convicting, that is, converting, terms. Each is a compendium of liturgical theology. Each is indispensable to one who would study Christian worship according to the grand and lofty Catholic tradition. Each is distinctive and distinguished in its way. It is, therefore, natural to think of them, if not on one's shelves to place them, side by side.“ | |||
