- „Two little booklets published by Benziger (95c. each), of which Romano Guardini is the author, the one „Sacred Signs“, translated by G. C. H. Pollen, S. J., the other, „The Spirit of the Liturgy“, translated by Ada Lane, will do much towards enlightening their readers about the symbolism of many of the commonplaces in the Church's liturgy. The author, who is at the forefront of the liturgical movement in Germany, is chiefly concerned not with historical or dogmatic aspects of the liturgy, but with bringing out the significance of the things symbolized. […] While the essay in „The Spirit of the Liturgy“ are concerned more with ist nature and significance, there is, however, one chapter in lighter vein, „The Playfulness of the Liturgy.“ Both volumes afford much tot hink about, and familiarity with them will be bound to excite a deeper appreciation of the why and wherefore of the Church's liturgy.“

- S. 202f.: „This is an excellent essay on the spirit and style of liturgical prayer, defining it, explaining it and the spiritual needs that it satisfies, stating the difficulties found in it by various types of mind and admitting, where necessary, its limitations and the need there may be for supplementing it by extra-liturgical devotions. Herr Guardini neither romanticizes the Liturgy as did the English and French Revivalists of the last century, nor does he sacramentalize it to the extent visible in some of his countrymen; his look is rather a piece of objective criticism, though not without persuasive power. He is particularly convincing when he develops the thesis that the Liturgy is the prayer of the Church qua Church, of the Bride of Christ, of the Body of Christ, of redeemed and sanctified humanity, and is therefore at once impersonal and inclusive.“

- "Those who wish to understand the deeper implications of that "liturgical revival" which is so marked a eature of modern Catholicism, will learn much from the beautiful essay on the Spirit of the Liturgy, by Romano Guardini (Sheed and Ward, 2s, 6d.). The unreal character of liturgie worship is a favourite theme with the critics of institutional religion; and indeed, it does not easily reveal its secret to the hurried observer. But in seven little chapters Dr. Guardini casts abundant light on the principles, both spiritual and psychological, which govern liturgic devotion, and exhibits its two-fold artistic and contemplative character. He shows on one hand how "the liturgy has laid down the serious rules of the sacred game which the soul plays before God"; and on the other, how the Divine Office, with its progressive movement, its objective and theocentric emphasis, is itself a mystical drama which "gives expression to the events of the Christian inner life."

- "Dr. Guardini is a leader of the liturgical movement in Germany. In this book he proposes the Liturgy as a solvent for the morbid introspection and subjectivism so prevalent today, and defends it against two extremists, the ritualist and the man who demands "practical results.""
