    • S. 1418: „It is customary for the proeceedings on the second day of the Eisenhüttentag to conclude with an address on a general subject. This year Professor R. Guardini of the University of Münich spoke on "The Incomplete Man and his Power." Modern man, said Prof. Guardini, might be master of Nature, but he was not master of his inner self. He tended more and more to base his judgments upon the suggestions of the Press and the radio and was in danger of losing the capacity to judge at all - in other words, he was not a complete man. This, said Prof. Guardini, was mainly because modern Western man had lost the capacity for rest and solitary contemplation which were essential for the mastery of one's self. Asiatic peoples, on the other hand, were in this respect more complete, for they had not altogether abandoned their age-old cultures with the powerful tradition of the importance of contemplation and the inner life. When these people advanced to a higher level of technological capabilities - which they were already achieving with notable speed and efficiency – then they might well be worthy of the full respect of the West. The sovereignty with which they conducted their affairs at international conferences should give us cause to think.“
