- S. 65: „It is not surprising that a contemporary review printed a very disparaging criticism of this book; many reviewers are apt to read lightly, and it must be said that to a superficial reader Dr. Guardini´s lectures will seem involved and sterile. His style is heavy and his argument difficult to follow, but those who will make the effort to understand and assimilate his teaching will find themselves enriched. The notion of conscience advanced in these essays is not substantially different from that contained in our manuals of moral theology, but the author has contributed something of his own in the manner of its presentment. He studies conscience as man's threefold response to the Good embodied in a particular situation in which action must be taken: his response to that Good — not in the abstract but as something to be realised and made concrete; to God's holiness as a living principle of goodness; and to His providence as the cause of the situation in which a particular action must be taken. From these elements the creative vitality of conscience is evolved. It is usual for moralists to proceed from the consideration of different kinds of conscience to the matter of its education. Dr. Guardini takes much of this for granted, but he singles out for special treatment one of the means whereby conscience may be formed and safeguarded, namely the practice of recollection. By allowing an inward space to the voice of God the soul's attention is disengaged from objects of lesser value, strength and responsibility take the place of dissipation and impulsiveness. Real perfection of conscience, viewed from the natural standpoint, is a matter of growth and of experience, viewed from the standpoint of faith, it is the work of grace.“
